British Taekwondo World Champion Bianca Walkden celebrated her first competitive outing of the year by taking the gold medal at the President’s Cup in Sweden.
The heavyweight was one of three GB Taekwondo medal winners with Jade Jones and Christian McNeish securing silver and bronze respectively in Helsingborg.
Triple world champion Walkden defeated Turkish rival and European gold medallist, Nafia Kus in the +73kg final.
She told GB Taekwondo: “It is nice to start the year off on top of the podium. It is time to keep pushing through for the main goal of 2020”
Two time Olympic champion Jade Jones was also competing for the first time this year and beat Poland’s Patrycja Adamkiewicz on the way to the -57kg final.
Unfortunately an MCL injury meant Jones had to withdraw before the Gold medal match and settle for the number two spot on the podium.
London based Christian McNeish completed the GB medal tally by taking bronze in the -68kg weight category.
“Unfortunately, it is not the result I wanted as gold is always the aim,” the reigning European champion told GB Taekwondo after the result.
