GB Taekwondo start 2019 with a bang
GB Taekwondo have come through the opening event of 2019 with an impressive four Gold medal haul. The team traveled to Turkey to take part in the President's Cup.
Mahama Cho joined two time world champion, Bianca Walkden, World Grand Slam winner, Lauren Williams, and Bradly Sinden, on top of the podium. While junior world champion, Jordyn Smith claimed bronze.
London Heavyweight Cho, managed to win over Croatia's Vedran Golec in the +87kg final, even after having his baggage lost en route.
“Some people would have been frustrated if they hadn’t got the things they needed for competition,” he told GB Taekwondo.
“But I remember from our focus day the thoughts of being positive and seeing the best out of all situations.
“Obviously, it’s not the best going into a tournament without the stuff you need, but I stayed positive and I am happy I was able to perform to the best of my ability and earn points towards qualifying a place for Tokyo 2020.
World number one Bianca Walkden had a walkover in the +73kg final when Polish competitor Aleksandra Kowalczuk withdrew through injury.
She still managed some notable victories en route to the gold medal.
“It’s great to start the year with gold and the plan is to keep it going with more golds,” she said.
“Now, it’s back to training harder and smarter before going to the US Open for hopefully another gold. No matter where I go I always want to win.”
Welsh wonder Lauren Williams defeated Russian Anastasiia Baklanova in the -67kg final to continue her fine form.
“It is amazing to start the year strongly,” said the reigning European champion.
“I had four good fights and came away with plenty to learn which I will take on board. Now, it’s back to training and iron out some common mistakes leading into the world championships.”
Bradley Sinden rounded out the Gold medals after beating Spain’s Javier Perez Polo 23-15 in the -68kg final.
The final medal came courtesy of Scottish fighter Jordyn Smith. She lost out in the semi-finals to number one seed Kyriaki Kouttouki of Cyprus in the -46kg division.
