GB rule the World Grand Slam
GB Taekwondo topped the medal table at the World Taekwondo World Grand Slam in Wuxi, China. Bianca Walkden and Lauren Williams each took Gold, while Jade Jones and Bradley Sinden claimed Silver.
Golden girls Walkden and Williams scooped an eye watering £100,000+ prize money between them. Second place finishers Jones and Sinden pocketed £16,000 after losing out in the Gold medal match.
Last year's Grand Slam winner Bianca, got her hands on the £52,000 Gold medal by beating American Madelynn Gorman-Shore, she told GB Taekwondo "“I couldn’t be happier,”
“I wanted to finish the year off with a gold medal and I’m happy I did it.“She gave me a good fight but deep down I was hungry to win.”
Welsh star Williams claimed her first Grand Slam gold. The two-time European champion defeated Turkey’s reigning world champion and double Olympic medallist Nur Tatar Askari in the final of the -67kg division.
“I wanted this so badly,” said the Newport fighter. “No one but my family and friends knew how much I wanted it.
“I’ve done it for them all back home and I feel on top of the world. There was no stopping me getting that gold.
“I went out there and stuck to my plan perfectly and I managed to pull it off.”
Double Olympic champion Jade Jones added a silver medal along with former World Championship bronze medallist, Bradly Sinden. They each reached the finals in the -57kg and -68kg divisions respectively.
Yorkshireman Sinden took an eye catching semi-final victory over South Korea’s three-time world champion, Lee Dae-Hoon. Though he was second best to China’s Shuai Zhao in the final.
Jade Jones was beaten to the Gold prize by Lijun Zhou from China. Scottish kicker Rebecca McGowan reached the semi finals and eventually lost out in the third place fight off against Aleksandra Kowalczuk.
The impressive silverware haul left GB Taekwondo sitting proudly at the top of the medal table in Wuxi.
