History maker Bradley is first British Male World Champion

May 22, 2019

Bradly Sinden became Britain’s first male able-bodied taekwondo champion at the World Championships in Manchester, highlighting the momentous success of Team GB Taekwondo.

After finishing in third place in South Korea two years ago, Bradley went all the way and finally defeated Spain’s Javier Perez Polo in the -68kg final.

“I am always happy when everyone succeeds,” he told GB Taekwondo.

“I want everyone to be their best in each weight category and we want to show how dominant GB is at the sport. But to bring it home for the boys is amazing,” he said.

“To become world or Olympic champion is a dream come true. Hopefully, I can do both because that’s what I am here to do.”

Meanwhile, Bianca Walkden became a record-breaking three-time world champion to further add to the GB success. The heavyweight world number one defeated  Shuyin Zheng in the +73kg final.

Olympic champion Jade Jones ended her long wait for the world title by defeating current holder Ah-Reum Lee. Her victory comes after she won silver and bronze medals at her previous four world championship appearances.

“It still doesn’t seem real." She said after finally breaking her world duck.

I have been dying to win this title but it’s the one that has got away so it just feels amazing.

“It’s always been the one that has got away. Sometimes, you have doubts-maybe I am just an Olympic girl.

“But I have done everything now so I can go to bed and sleep at night now.

Teenager Aaliyah Powell boosted the GB medal tally to 4 by becoming the youngest ever senior World Championship medallist, she took a bronze medal.

Mahama Cho went close to adding another, but finished without a medal after losing on golden point to Brazilian Maicon Siqueira.

Maddison Moore, Rebecca McGowan and Mason Yarrow all managed to progress through to the quarter final stage before bowing out.
