Double US Open delight for GB Taekwondo

March 6, 2019

18 year old Rebecca McGowan from Dumbarton and Junior World Champion Jordyn Smith each took Gold in the recent Taekwondo US Open in Las Vegas.

McGowan claimed the -73kg US Open crown by beating home favourite and second seed, Madelynn Gorman-Shore 7-5.

Jordyn Smith managed to make it a Scottish double by striking Gold in the -46kg division.

A thrilled Rebecca told GB Taekwondo:

“It feels amazing to come first at last. All the tough training has been worth it and is definitely paying off.

“I tried to stay focussed and composed until the last seconds which definitely helped me in the second match when it was so tight,”

Multiple champion Bianca Walkden reached the final of the +73 kg division before losing to Mexico’s Briseida Acosta.

Christian McNeish returned to form at -68kg, reaching the gold medal match up. He lost out in a close contest (17-19) with China’s Olympic and World champion, Shuai Zhao.

Additionally, there was a bronze medal for Maddison Moore (-49kg) and another for the Development Team’s Mason Yarrow.

In the men’s heavyweight tournament recent President’s Cup winner Mahama Cho lost 23-20 against Turkey’s Emre Kutalmis Atelsi at the quarter-final stage.

Damon Sansum, champion in 2015, also went out in the last eight, he was beaten 21-5 by Wei-Ting Liu.
